Distillery location purchased
BEDFORD — The owners of Dalesmen Distillery and Brewery recently closed on the former Ford building located in downtown Bedford.
Nate Haupt, Mike Wood and Derek Dowler, the owners of Dalesmen LLC, plan to make whisky and beer as well as other spirits including gin, vodka and rum.
“Bedford was always the obvious choice for me, with my family ties and family history here and knowing what the town has to offer,” co-founder Mike Wood said in a statement. “Bedford not only gives the English “small town” feeling that we wanted, but also has a history with England and Scotland as well as whisky itself.”
Derek Dowler said Bedford was always Mike’s first choice.
“When Nate and I made our first visit, we knew right away that Bedford was our choice as well. The strong sense of community along with the overwhelming support and welcome we have received further validates that we definitely made the right decision,” Dowler said in a statement. “Our vision has always been to be true to our brand/story and bring back some of England and Scotland by making traditional English-inspired beer and Scottish-influenced whisky and spirits. We also want to embrace the whisky history that abounds in Bedford County and the region.”
The 36,000-square-foot building at the corner of Pitt and Richard streets in Bedford has two floors each comprising about 18,000 square feet.
It was formerly owned by the Robert Foor family.
Plans for renovations are in development. The Dalesmen team has been actively working with Moss Architects of Pittsburgh.
With the settlement of the building now complete, the Dalesmen co-founders have already started engaging with potential local construction firms.
