Checkpoint stop leads to arrest
Cresson man faces felony drug charges
From Mirror staff reports
A Cresson man faces felony and misdemeanor drug charges after a DUI checkpoint in East Freedom earlier this month.
Marcus J. Eichenlaub, 20, of Cresson, was detained the night of April 5, after the car he was riding in was directed to park because of a broken tail light during a Blair County DUI checkpoint at Dunnings Highway and Municipal Street in East Freedom.
According to charges filed by Freedom Township police, Eichenlaub was in the back seat of the 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt. When officers had the driver pull to the side because of the broken tail light, one of the officers smelled marijuana coming from inside the car. A police dog was walked along the outside of the vehicle and the dog allegedly alerted to drugs along the passenger side of the vehicle.
Police said Eichenlaub had three separate bags of marijuana that held about 30 grams each, as well as a smaller bag of about 3 grams.
Police noted that Eichenlaub said the pot was for his personal use and that he was going to party with some friends.
Eichenlaub was released that night and arraigned last week on felony and misdemeanor drug charges.
He remains free on an unsecured $20,000 bond and is due in Martinsburg District Court on Thursday for a preliminary hearing.
