After-school arts program open

ArtsAltoona is accepting registrations for an upcoming session of its After School Arts Program — “Art in Motion” — through Friday.

The free program is for students of all genders and all abilities in grades 7, 8 and 9, according to an ArtsAltoona news release.

The sessions will be held in the Altoona Area Junior High School cafeteria on Tuesdays between April 9 and June 4.

They’ll be taught by Penn State University dance professor KT Huckabee. She will teach the students how to create “expressive movements,” according to the news release.

With the sessions, ArtsAltoona hopes to help kids who don’t have much outside support and who don’t participate in many extra-curricular activities.

“Our mission is to encourage and give hope to children who need it,,” said Ann Bickel, ASAP program director, “(to) give students the opportunity to try out new skills and build confidence.”

Students can register by calling ArtsAltoona at 201-7004 or by picking up an application from counselor Eileen Starr at the junior high school.

City offering fire safety equipment

City residents in the low-to-medium-income category can receive smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and fire extinguishers installed in their homes by firefighters through a program funded by the city’s Community Development Block Grant program.

The goal is to provide the equipment in 100 homes. Upon reaching that goal, the program will end, according to a city news release. Applicants will receive the help in the order in which they apply for it.

Those interested should call the Fire Administration office at 949-2230 or visit the city’s website, www.altoonapa.gov, then click the link for the program, “Receive fire prevention products,” under News/Announcements on the main page.
