ACT names new executive director

Iowa resident ‘unanimous’ choice to lead theater

The Altoona Community Theatre Board of Directors confirmed Tuesday the hiring of Cindy Stanbro of Spencer, Iowa, as its new executive director.

Stanbro is expected to start in a few weeks, according to Eric Wolf, ACT’s board president. Her theater management experience includes the Vital Theatre Company in New York City and Millbrook Playhouse in Mill Hall, located north east of Lock Haven, Clinton County.

She and her

husband, Jason, co-founded The Winterset Stage in Winterset, Iowa, including the adaptive re-use of an existing building into a performance space.

Most recently, she served as the executive director of the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association.

In that role since 2017, Stanbro oversaw operations and management processes of the association.

In addition, her responsibilities included growing new programs for young people and leading the development of a new museum, according to the Iowa Rock ‘n Roll Music Association’s website.

More than 60 applicants applied, Wolf said.

“We narrowed it down to a short list of seven and interviewed five candidates,” Wolf said. “Cindy was the unanimous choice of the search committee and the ACT Board of Directors.”

Stanbro fills the position that was held by Steven Helsel, who passed away on Nov. 21, 2018.
