Hollidaysburg close to parking changes

HOLLIDAYSBURG — Borough Council members are compromising as they draw closer to approving changes to the borough’s parking ordinance, councilmen said.

“We are trying to make it streamlined, where rules for all parking districts are similar,” Patrick Plummer said. That means implementing a time restraint on parking reservation permits from

7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the courthouse district.

In addition, visitor passes will no longer be given out because they were abused, Plummer said.

The council’s solicitor had concerns about the legality of some borough-issued parking permits that residents obtained to reserve spaces on public roads.

However, the proposal was tabled last month at the request of council member Brady Leahey because it would also have revoked permits for about eight households that the administration had deemed unqualified to hold permits.

When the topic was reopened during a public meeting Thursday, Plummer said the council reached a consensus to grandfather in the existing permits that were in question.

“We are trying to eliminate confusion and be fair to people with existing parking permits by grandfathering them in,” Plummer said.

Last month, Mayor Joe Dodson said if the Borough Council approves a parking measure that would take away street parking permits from residents, he would veto it. He could not be reached Friday for comment on the new proposal.

Leahey said Friday that he was glad council seems in agreement to grandfather in the existing parking passes, but he said he will oppose one part of the proposal that would put all parking districts under the same rules. Leahey said the current rules in the courthouse district are needed because of high traffic with courthouse workers.

Council will vote on the proposal at the April 11 meeting, Leahey said.
