Spring Cove School District receives more grant funds

Board approves radio purchase, employee bonus

From Mirror staff reports

ROARING SPRING — The Spring Cove School District has increased its total grant awards nearly ninefold this year compared with last year, according to Superintendent Betsy Baker.

At Tuesday’s school board meeting, Baker said the district now has a total of $579,660 in competitive grant awards, including the recent securement of $5,922 for a reach-in refrigerator. She said the school had $65,250 in grants last year.

The school board unanimously approved a number of agenda items at the meeting, including the purchase of 40 radios with programming for $21,438.

Board President Brian Gahagan said the radios would be for communication between all of the district’s campuses for safety reasons and noted issues with the current radios’ signals.

With the approved purchase, Gahagan said the district will work to get better repeaters for the radios to improve communication.

Stacy Lantz, a school psychologist, will be awarded a one-time $2,500 bonus on Feb. 28 for earning a post-doctorate degree.

The board also unanimously approved the disbursement of donations to local libraries, fire companies and ambulance services.

The Martinsburg Community Library and Roaring Spring Community Library each will receive $3,500. East Freedom Volunteer Fire Company, Friendship Volunteer Fire Company and Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Company each will receive $500. AMED and Hollidaysburg American Legion Ambulance Service will receive $450 apiece from the district.

The 2019-20 academic year start and end dates also were approved by the board. The first student day will be Aug. 26, 2019, and the last student day will be June 3, 2020.

The new bleacher scorer’s table arrived Thursday and was immediately put into use, Baker said Tuesday in her superintendent report.

The report also said the Dragon Pride Foundation and Rotary are planning an annual golf outing fundraiser on June 14.

The board approved the retirement of elementary teacher Susan Claar, with March 1 as her last working day. Claar served in the district for 24 years.

The additions of Tammy Reasy as a paraprofessional and Jennifer Stapleton as a custodian and paraprofessional to the list of support staff substitutions also were approved. The board approved Jeffrey Lafferty to serve as a bus driver for Maxwell Transit for the rest of this academic year.

A request to authorize the superintendent to hire a junior high assistant softball coach replacement was also unanimously agreed upon.
