Central High School unveils new gym
Spring Cove School District staff and community stakeholders unveiled and celebrated a newly renovated gymnasium at Central High School Tuesday.
The renovation project, which included new flooring and bleachers, followed a September weekend of rainstorms that damaged a large section of the 59-year-old gym floor.
Spring Cove Superintendent Betsy Baker said, “This project has truly been a community effort, and it makes me extremely proud to be a Dragon. We had a large number of groups and individuals who contributed to this project, and we greatly appreciate their support.”
The original floor outlived its typical 50-year life span and repairing only the damaged area was “impractical and not cost effective,” according to a press release. With the new bleachers, the gym now has a seating capacity of 602 comparedwith its previous capacity of 544 and now includes handicap seating.
Total cost of renovations was an estimated $275,000 through the Miller Flooring Co.
Removal and replacement of the maple gym floor with an airflow vent system cost about $148,475; replacement of bleachers cost $84,525; and the leveling of the concrete subfloor cost $42,000.
Central High School Principal Stephanie Thompson thanked those who contributed funds to the project. “Through this project, our entire school community has demonstrated adaptability, flexibility and a positive attitude, and made the best of a difficult situation,” she said.
The Morrisons Cove Rotary Club donated $6,350 to enhance the graphics for the gym floor, the Dragon Pride Foundation donated $3,578.75 to purchase a new scorer’s table, which will be coming soon, and the Central Athletic Booster groups made a $500 donation from Curry Supply for new red wall pads.
