Bedford commissioner Dallara seeks to retain seat

Bedford County Commissioner Barry Dallara is seeking re-election.

“I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to serve,” Dallara said. “I truly understand the monumental responsibility that comes with the office. My commitment to you as a commissioner is to make decisions that keep the county on a solid foundation that protects the safety, security and general well-being of our citizens.”

“You elected me to provide leadership to improve our county, and I have endeavored to do exactly that,” he added.

If re-elected, Dallara said he would continue to prioritize the general well-being of the county’s citizens, support economic development initiatives and initiatives that assist veterans, improve services that enhance quality of life and create more wholesome recreational opportunities for youth.

Dallara served part of a term when he was sworn in as a replacement in 2014 to serve the rest of a commissioner’s term. He was then elected in 2015 for a full four-year term, starting in 2016.

He said the current board of commissioners has accomplished a lot, including developing annual budgets without increasing taxes, collaborating to construct a solar array, improving inmate health care services at reduced costs and partnering to improve emergency services.

The 73-year-old candidate is a veteran of the Vietnam War and retired from the U.S. Army Reserves after 23 years as a colonel.

He worked as an adjunct faculty member at Kaplan University in Maryland. The commissioner also has 35 years of public education experience and served as superintendent for both the Waynesboro Area and Forest Hills school districts.

Dallara graduated with a bachelor’s degree in industrial arts education from California State University in Pennsylvania. He also has a master’s degree in vocational-industrial education from Pennsylvania State University.

He is a member of the Bedford County Young Life Committee, the Chestnut Ridge Lions Club, Bedford American Legion and the Bedford County Veterans Association, among other organizations.

Dallara and his wife, Sharon, have two children.
