Veterans Day events

ALTOONA — The Blair County War Veterans Council will hold a ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the armistice ending World War I at 11 a.m. Monday with a parade and ceremonies in downtown Altoona. More than 10 units have signed up so far. After the parade, Command Sgt. Maj. Harry Buchanan, state senior enlisted adviser at Joint Force Headquarters at Fort Indiantown Gap, will speak.

SAXTON — Gregory Crooks, Capt. Phillips VFW Post 4129 commander, will host the Bedford County Veterans Association’s annual Veterans Day parade and ceremony on Saturday in Saxton. Lineup begins at 9 and will start promptly at 10 a.m.

The Veterans Day ceremony will be held after the parade at the Saxton Volunteer Fire Hall. The guest speaker is Sigrid Andrew, director of Van Zandt VA Medical Center in Altoona.

WILLIAMSBURG — The Grace Pointe Community Church of God, 815 Yellow Springs Drive, Williamsburg, will hold a Veterans Day service, titled “Honoring Our Veterans,” at 10:45a.m. Sunday. The Rev. Bob Moore, who is the minister to the military director for the Church of God, will speak.

After the service, a free luncheon will be held at the Williamsburg Farm Show Building.

GALLITZIN — An 11 a.m. Mass at St. Demetrius Church will mark the start of the Gallitzin American Legion’s observance of the 100th anniversary of the armistice ending World War I. After the Mass, veterans are requested to attend a Veterans Day program at Veterans Memorial Park, where a service will begin at noon. Altoona Fire Inspector Tim Hughes, a veteran, will be the main speaker.

PATTON — Walter McCoy American Legion Post 614 and John White Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 779 will conduct Veterans Day services beginning 11 a.m. Sunday at the Veterans Memorial at the Patton Recreational Park. Veterans are asked to arrive by 10:45 a.m. After the service at the memorial, participants will conduct services in front of the VFW post and then at the American Legion post. A lunch will be served at the Legion for participating veterans.

PORTAGE — The Portage Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 895 in conjunction with Amvets Post 150, Amvets Ladies Auxiliary, Sons of the Amvets Squadron 150 and Portage Veterans Ritual Team will hold ceremonies beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday at Prospect Cemetery. At 11 a.m., services will continue at the Benscreek Social Club in Portage Township.

SHANKSVILLE — Flight 93 National Memorial is offering special Veterans Day programs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in the Learning Center at the national memorial’s Visitor Center Complex. Join Park Rangers and Park Ambassadors in observance of Veterans Day through a series of special programs. The national memorial’s entrance is located at 6424 Lincoln Highway, Stoystown. The memorial is free and open daily, sunrise to sunset.

JOHNSTOWN — The Cambria County War Memorial Veterans Committee is inviting community partners to participate in the National Bell Tolling in commemoration of World War I. The committee, along with Kongsberg Protech Systems USA, will hold a ceremony from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday at 1st Summit Arena @ Cambria County War Memorial to unveil a painting and plaque memorializing the 203 residents of the county who gave their lives during World War I.
