Heat forces P-O dismissal
High temperatures prompt other schools to let students to leave early
From Mirror staff reports
In a rare reason for early dismissal, Philipsburg-Osceola School District cut class short Tuesday afternoon because of the heat.
District spokeswoman Linda Hockey said the administration made the decision because temperatures in the high 80s could have posed a danger to students in both secondary and elementary buildings that have no air conditioning.
In her 40 years at the district, including her years as a student, Hockey said she cannot remember an early dismissal because of heat.
Students were dismissed after lunch and fulfilled state requirements for the day to count without a need to make up the day, Hockey said.
Other school districts in the region also dismissed students early Tuesday; WJAC reported the Southern Huntingdon County School District, Conemaugh Township Area School District and Windber Area School District dismissed early Tuesday.
