Tyrone anticipates roof project will conclude soon

TYRONE — Tyrone Area School District Physical Plant Director Tom Muir said he anticipates contractors will finish the elementary school roofing replacement by Aug. 17, about a week before the Aug. 23 start of school.

In addition, new air conditioning units are being installed before the start of the school year, he said.

At the school board’s work session Tuesday evening, the board discussed hiring consultants to develop documents for replacing a waterline at the middle school and high school. The board will vote Aug. 14 at its regular meeting to enter into a $18,500 contract with Gatter & Diehl Inc. Consulting Engineers for developing a scope of work recommendation related to a waterline at the building that houses both schools.

Muir said the lines have not been replaced since the building was constructed in 1961. The work is planned for next summer, he said, and would last the district for decades.

A couple thousand dollars in revenue could be added to the district’s coffers through leasing office space to a substitute teacher services company in the 2018-19 year. The administration is set to request the board vote Aug. 14 on a lease agreement with Substitute Teacher Services for periodic use of office space with a total revenue of $2,400 for the year.

As the school year nears, the board is set to drop a classroom appliances fee charged to faculty since 2009. Since 2009, teachers paid a fee to have a microwave, coffee pot and other appliances in their rooms. Superintendent Cathy Harlow said Tuesday that only $1,100 has been collected from the fee annually and eliminating the fee would be good for teachers.
