Smithfield officer sickened
An officer at the State Correctional Institution at Smithfield was taken by ambulance to a hospital after becoming disoriented after picking up a piece of paper an inmate dropped on the floor, the state Department of Corrections said.
Two Smithfield officers observed an inmate acting suspiciously about 10 a.m. Sunday. When the officers searched the inmate, he dropped an item that contained white, orange and blue paper.
About 20 minutes later the officer that picked up the item reported a headache and as staff was preparing to take him to J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Huntingdon, the officer became increasingly disoriented and confused and an ambulance was called.
No additional information on the officer is available at this time. No other employees reported feeling sickened.
