Man accused of strangling

Girlfriend allegedly attacked for trying to visit family

A city man faces charges after police said he choked his girlfriend.

Tracy Bey, 21, of Altoona, was arraigned Sunday on a felony charge of strangulation, along with a misdemeanor simple assault charge stemming from an alleged incident Wednesday on the 1900 block of Fifth Street where he allegedly grabbed his girlfriend by the neck and strangled her, police said.

According to Altoona police, it was about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday when the woman called police from a Cherry Avenue location. She reported that she had tried leaving her apartment to visit her family when Bey refused to allow her to leave.

Police said when she tried to walk outside, Bey grabbed the woman by the neck with one hand and squeezed.

The woman said he choked her for about three minutes and she became lightheaded and almost passed out.

When police tried to find Bey at the apartment on the 1900 block of Fifth Street, he was gone.

Bey was arrested over the weekend and released on a unsecured $25,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is slated for Wednesday at Central Court.
