One killed, one injured in I-99 crash

A crash on Interstate 99 that killed an Altoona man remains under investigation by state police.

Mark A. Lee, 56, of Altoona died at UPMC Altoona on Wednesday from injuries he received earlier when a southbound 2003 Jeep Liberty driven by 52-year-old Charles B. Mills of Tyrone crossed the grass median and slammed into Lee’s 2000 GMC Sonoma pickup truck, according to state police in Hollidaysburg.

The crash, which happened at 6:50 a.m. at mile marker 48.7 in Snyder Township, just north of the Tyrone exit, closed down northbound I-99 between Tyrone and Bald Eagle for several hours.

Police indicated Mills was taken to UPMC Altoona with serious injuries.

A third vehicle, driven by 45-year-old Danny Shultz of Tyrone, was following behind Lee and hit debris from the crash.

Shultz was not injured, state police said.

State police said Mills lost control of the Jeep and it crossed the grass median after traveling off the roadway and onto the southbound land. Then, its backend collided with Lee’s truck as he drove north.

State police said the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
