Mirror staffers recognized at PNPA, PWPA

‘We’re very proud of our staff and the solid job it does day after day after day.’

Nine individual members of the Altoona Mirror, along with the sports staff, have been recognized in this year’s journalism contest by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Press Association and the Western Pennsylvania Press Club.

First-place PNPA recognition went to the Mirror sports staff for “Blitz” magazine in the niche publication category, along with John Mehno in column writing for a tribute to Pittsburgh Steeler owner Dan Rooney.

Feature writer Cherie Hicks won second place and honorable mention PNPA awards in the feature beat reporting (travel and history beats), along with honorable mention for personality profile.

Photographer Gary Baranec won a PNPA honorable mention for his photo “Winning contagious at Central,” and sports writer Cory Giger won honorable mention for column writing.

Reporter Kay Stephens won first place in the Pennsylvania Women’s Press Association for outdoor/environmental coverage.

The PNPA and PWPA awards were presented at the organization’s annual banquet Saturday night at the Wyndam Hotel in Gettysburg.

Five members of the Mirror staff earned Golden Quill awards presented by the Western Pennsylvania Press Club on May 24 at Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.

Reporter Bill Kibler won two Golden Quills in the feature writing and business/technical/consumer categories.

Reporters Russ O’Reilly (investigative reporting) and Sean Sauro (environmental coverage) also won Golden Quills, along with sports reporter Michael Boytim for column writing.

Kibler was a finalist in five Golden Quill categories. Sauro and Stephens were also finalists in the history category.

In addition to its PNPA recognition, the Mirror sports staff was selected as a top-10 daily section by the Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE). The distinction marked the 16th consecutive year that the Mirror sports staff earned APSE recognition.

“We’re very proud of our staff and the solid job it does day after day after day,” Mirror Managing Editor Neil Rudel said. “It’s always nice to be recognized by your peers, so we’re grateful for another good showing this year.”
