AASD receives education grant

Altoona Area School District was awarded a 2018-19 Adult Basic Education Direct Service Grant for increasing and improving services for adult learners and their families.

Services will be provided at seven locations in Blair, Huntingdon and Fulton counties, including The Nehemiah Project at the former Wright School building, 1809 11th St., an underserved area, a district press release states.

The district is one of

32 Pennsylvania grant recipients, and it also received a tutoring grant.

The district’s Adult Education Program will provide services for adult learners pursuing high school equivalency and career training programs.

The tutoring program uses volunteer tutors and classroom aides to assist with English as a second language, math and reading support. Tutoring services are also provided to Blair County inmates who are part of the re-entry-career preparation program.

Adult education site locations include: the Stevens Building, 200 E. Crawford Ave., the Nehemiah Project, 1809 11th St., Juniata United Methodist Church, 808 N. Fourth St. and PA CareerLink, 3001 Fairway Drive, all in Altoona; PA CareerLink, 54 Pennsylvania Ave., and Huntingdon County Child & Adult Development Corp., 52 Juniata Ave., both in Huntingdon; and PA CareerLink, 122 W. Market St., McConnellsburg.
