Tyrone seeks grant

The Tyrone Area School District is applying for a $40,000 state grant that would help build a partnership between the district and area businesses.

“Regardless of getting the grant, Superintendent Cathy Harlow and I are working on business partnerships,” Curriculum Director Leslie Estep said.

The grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry would fund a group of 20 Tyrone Area teachers through next year to research local businesses with the aim of making connections between jobs in the area and their academic curriculum.

“We feel the school district and businesses haven’t partnered as well as we should,” Estep said.

She said workforce education is important for students.

“Workforce education happens at the teacher level. This will help teachers talk about the meaning of what students are learning.”
