Tyrone approves engineering work

TYRONE — Borough Council at a recent meeting approved payment of up to $34,000 for engineering in preparation for resurfacing and other renovations on the sewer plant’s reserve clarifiers.

The renovation work itself could cost about $525,000, according to consulting engineer Kevin Nester of GHD in Huntingdon.

The concrete surfaces of the floors of the clarifiers, last upgraded in 2000, have cracked and need to be replaced, while the blade assembly needs cleaned and repainted, Nester told council.

The floors tend to deteriorate faster when not constantly in use, Nester said.

The 2-inch thick grout of the floors will need to be broken up and removed and new floors poured, then sealed, Nester said.

The blades can be used to float the new grout, Nester said.

Clarifiers are shallow circular pools with slowly rotating blades that scrape settled sludge into openings in the bottom, plus skimmers that remove scum that floats to the surface of sewage water, according to an online source.

The work could be done anytime in the next few years, after the engineering work is done, sewer plant Superintendent Tim Nulton told council.

“It’s a big project,” Nulton said.

The borough would pay for the project with sewer capital funding, said Mayor Bill Latchford.
