Memorial Day events

ALTOONA

— The Bishop Eugene A. Garvey Catholic War Veterans Post 1691 will start its Memorial Day celebration with a parade beginning at 8:45 a.m. at 13th Street and Crawford Avenue. The units will take 13th Street, to First Avenue, to 12th Street, to Fourth Avenue, to 14th Street, to St. Mary’s Church for a Mass. The parade will then take Fifth Avenue to 15th Street, to Second Avenue, to 12th Street, to St. Mary’s Cemetery. The speaker at the ceremony will be Army Capt. Jayme Rhodes. The post’s honor guard will fire a salute to all veterans at 1:30 p.m. at The Wall the Heals at the Van Zandt VA Medical Center.

— A Memorial Day parade in downtown will start at 10 a.m. at Eighth Avenue and 17th Street. The route goes to 12th Avenue, to 12th Street, to 11th Avenue, to 15th Street, where a ceremony will be held at the Robert E. Laws Veterans Mall.

— The Juniata Memorial Day parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. at North Eighth Street and North Fourth Avenue. The parade will travel to North Sixth Avenue, to North Second Street, to North 11th Avenue, to Broadway, to Brubaker ball field, with a service by Juniata VFW Post 8685.

ASHVILLE

Cambria County President Commissioner Tom Chernisky will be the featured speaker at the John Lipple VFW Post 4315 ceremony. The recognition ceremonies will start with a parade at 9 a.m., and the formal ceremonies at the VFW post starting at 9:30 a.m.

CLAYSBURG

The Claysburg American Legion will have a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. at Union Cemetery with music, readings and a speech by retired U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Dr. William J. Kirsch. In case of inclement weather, the program will be held at Christ Lutheran Church.

CRESSON

The Cresson American Legion will hold a ceremony for the installation of new veteran plaques to its “Wall That Whispers A Story of Honor” at 11 a.m. at the legion. Julie Decker, a member of the nursing program at Penn State, will speak. A light lunch will be served after the ceremony.

GALLITZIN

The Gallitzin American Legion will have a flag raising at 8:15 a.m. at the post, and a program at 9 a.m. at Veterans Park on Main Street, with retired Army Maj. Michael Zerbee speaking. After the program, veterans will visit Union, St. Mary’s, St. Patrick’s and Gospel cemeteries and hold a brief ceremony at each. After that, they will go to the Gallitzin fire hall for a service honoring firefighters. Lunch and refreshments will follow at the post.

HOLLIDAYSBURG

American Legion Post 516 will have a parade and ceremony beginning at 9:30 a.m. Monday. The parade will take Allegheny, Union, Walnut and Montgomery streets, culminating at the Diamond for a ceremony in which Karen Cornell will be presented with a Gold Star Mother banner, plaque and pin. Her son, U.S. Army Spec. Chad Edmundson, was killed in Iraq nine years ago.

PATTON

The Memorial Day military observance in Patton will take place at area cemeteries. Services begin at 6:30 a.m. at the Revolutionary War Cemetery, followed by services at St. Augustine, Flinton, Beaver Valley and St. Lawrence cemeteries. A parade will begin at 9 a.m., with retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Tammy Parker as speaker. After the parade, veterans will conduct military services at the following cemeteries: Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine and Orthodox, Fairview and St. Mary/St. George. A memorial tribute to veterans will be held at the Patton Veterans Memorial in Patton Park, VFW Post 779 and the American Legion Post 614.

WOODBURY

A Memorial Day service will be held at the Woodbury Area Community Center.
