Bedford DA office fills staff positions
BEDFORD — The Bedford County commissioners approved the hiring of three staff members and the promotion of one at the District Attorney’s Office at Tuesday’s meeting.
Jonathan Thomas has been promoted to first assistant district attorney at a yearly salary of $43,000. Dwight Diehl has been hired as assistant district attorney at $42,000, Nancy Smith-Diehl as multi-disciplinary team coordinator at $23,500 and Cheryl L. Mays as secretary at $24,000.
The DA’s office is still collecting resumes and conducting interviews to fill the detective position, according to District Attorney Lesley Childers-Potts.
Commissioner Josh Lang said he and his colleagues will do what they can to support county staff and services and clarified the commissioners cannot infringe on county offices’ staff recommendations, citing county code.
The county commissioners “shall in no way affect the hiring, discharging and supervising rights and obligations with respect to such employees as may be vested in the judges or all other county offices,” Lang read from county code section 16.20.
Lang said the district attorney’s office, therefore, has the full authority to make those staffing recommendations.
Charwin Reichelderfer, county sheriff, confirmed Mays is officially transferring from the sheriff’s office to the DA’s office and said she is a good “fit” for Childers-Potts.
He added the sheriff’s office had three secretaries and initially sent Mays over to the DA office on a loaner basis to help Childers-Potts with her transition. Reichelderfer congratulated Mays on getting the DA office secretary position.
The county commissioners also approved the week of June 4-8 as Child Welfare Professionals Appreciation Week and June 11-15 as Child Welfare Service Providers Appreciation Week at the meeting.
There were three construction bids submitted for the rehabilitation of bridge 31 near the Bedford Springs Resort: $342,310 from Cottle’s Asphalt Maintenance Inc., $369,651 from BCS Construction Inc. and $404,466.46 from Gordon Delozier Inc.
A bid recommendation will be made by the commissioners at their next meeting on June 5.
