Altoona woman takes deal in theft case

From Mirror staff reports

HOLLIDAYSBURG — An Altoona woman has pleaded guilty to criminal charges of theft by deception and forgery in exchange for five years probation.

Toni C. Mishock, 37, entered the plea Friday in Blair County Court to the charges that Bellwood police filed in September.

In those charges, Mishock was accused of stealing five checks that belonged to a local union for which her ex-boyfriend is an officer.

Charges indicate that in June, Mishock got Robert M. McKnight of Altoona to take the checks to local banks and cash them for $2,750. McKnight told police that he cashed the check for Mishock, who told him she was owed the money but lacked an account with the bank so she couldn’t cash them.

Bank surveillance tape showed Mishock was with McKnight when he cashed the checks, police said.

Judge Wade Kagarise, who accepted Mishock’s plea to the charges, indicated that she must pay toward the $2,750 restitution owed to First Commonwealth Bank. Defense attorney Ed Zang, representing Mishock, said his client already had money set aside for that.

Bellwood police also charged McKnight with 20 counts of theft by deception and forgery. His court case remains open.
