Police arrest city man on assault, weapons charges
An Altoona man is facing aggravated assault, weapon possession and related criminal charges in connection with an incident in which police said he severely beat a woman.
Nyshaun D. Kemp, 23, 1313 Rosehill Drive, was arrested early Sunday morning on the 1300 block of Eighth Avenue where officers caught up with him after he tried to flee while his hands were cuffed behind his back.
The pursuit developed after Blair County 911 received a cellphone call about 2 a.m. and could only hear a physical assault taking place in the background.
In a statement released Sunday, Altoona police credited the 911 Center for locating the cellphone and directing officers who responded.
It was later discovered, police said in the statement, that Kemp had severely beaten a woman he knows in the area of 19th Street and Margaret Avenue. While assisting the woman, the handcuffed Kemp started to run. Officers chased him a few blocks before apprehending him.
Upon arrest, police reviewed the contents of Kemp’s backpack and found two loaded firearms, a Walther PPX .40 caliber handgun and a Ruger Mark IV 22/45 pistol with an obliterated serial number.
Kemp, as a convicted felon, is prohibited from possession of a firearm.
He was lodged in Blair County Prison on Sunday, police said.
