Man found dead in pond

Group-home resident had been reported missing

A man was found dead Friday morning in a Cambria County pond hours after he was reported missing from a Patton-area group home.

The man was found about 10:47 a.m. in a pond in a wooded area north of Route 36 in Clearfield Township, according to an information release from state police at Ebensburg.

Police said they are not revealing the man’s name until his family is notified.

The man was found in a small pond about a half-mile from Willow Lane, police said.

“The death is not suspicious; however, the investigation is ongoing,” police wrote in the release.

Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees told the Tribune Democrat that the pond along the 100 block of Willow Lane is about 5 feet deep.

A message left by the Mirror for Lees on Friday morning was not returned by early evening.

An autopsy was to be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death, according to police.

Skills of Central Pennsylvania CEO Rebecca Aungst said the man had been in the organization’s care for more than 30 years.

“We’re just trying to get our heads around the whole tragedy. … He was like family to us,” she said.

On Friday afternoon, Aungst said she was not aware of the circumstances that preceded the man’s death, including why and how he left the facility.

Skills staff will cooperate with investigations conducted by the state police, as well as regulatory organizations, Aungst said.

She said an internal review also will be conducted.

“Our goal right now is to support the family and our staff,” she said. “Our hearts and prayers really go out to his family.”
