City warns residents to clear sidewalks

City residents must clear snow and ice from sidewalks to create paths at least 18 inches wide within 24 hours after the end of winter storms, based on the city’s sidewalk snow/ice removal ordinance, according to a news release published by the city Wednesday. The ordinance applies to sidewalks on both public and private property, including property where buildings are vacant, and to curb cuts at corners.

If ice can’t be removed, sand or some other abrasive material must be used to render sidewalks safe. No snow may be thrown into the street.

Failure to comply with the ordinance is a code violation punishable by fines.

To report problems, call the Codes & Inspections Department at 949-2456 or use a form on the front page of the city website,, under Sidewalk Snow & Ice Removal.
