Boy receives heart transplant

An 11-year-old Hollidaysburg boy is reported to be doing well following heart transplant surgery at a Pittsburgh hospital.

Ryder McDermitt, who developed heart problems as a result of his battle with leukemia, learned last summer that he needed a heart transplant. Online postings indicate that the surgery was completed Friday and that his mother, Karrie McDermitt, reported him to be doing well.

The Altoona Mirror, in 2014, profiled Ryder and his battle with cancer in a story that was published in connection with the annual Relay For Life fundraising event.

At that time, Ryder and his Relay team were celebrating his health and a successful battle against cancer which included multiple rounds of chemotherapy, radiation and a cord blood transplant.
