Police: Man drove 100 mph in city

A Juniata man faces charges after police say he drove 100 mph on the 10th Avenue expressway.

Daniel R. Turnbaugh, 47, of 612 N. Sixth Ave. was arrested Thursday afternoon after he allegedly was spotted by an Altoona police officer driving at a high rate of speed between Chestnut and Union avenues.

Altoona police Lt. Jeffrey Pratt was driving west at 12:40 p.m. when Turnbaugh, who was driving a BMW 330 CI sedan, merged with high speed onto the road from the Chestnut Avenue entrance ramp and crossed three lanes without signaling. Pratt noted in the charges that Turnbaugh tailgated a minivan once he got in the far left lane, and when the van moved into the center lane, the BMW accelerated rapidly. Police contend Turnbaugh ignored Pratt’s emergency lights and siren and continued along 10th Avenue at a speed of 100 mph before exiting at Union Avenue.

Turnbaugh did pull over two blocks after turning onto Union Avenue, police noted in the charges.

When asked why he didn’t pull over, Turnbaugh allegedly laughed and said there was no safe place to pull over and that he had not been speeding. Turnbaugh claimed his car could not go 100 mph, police said.

Turnbaugh was booked on a felony fleeing police charge along with a misdemeanor count of recklessly endangering another person and released on an unsecured $25,000 bond. He was also cited for following too closely, failure to use a turn signal and speeding.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday at Central Court.
