Lockard wraps up 44 years of service on AASD board
Dick Lockard’s ceremonious exit from the Altoona Area School Board included a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and many words of gratitude from fellow board members.
After 44 years of serving on the board, Lockard’s last meeting was on Monday.
“It is a remarkable span by a remarkable man,” Rep. John McGinnis, R-Altoona, said as he presented Lockard with a citation from the state House of Representatives.
A part of the citation commended Lockard for demonstrating responsibility, dedication, knowledge and integrity through his service on the board.
“He knows and lives the ethic of Christian charity,” McGinnis added.
McGinnis also thanked all board members who are not returning to the board in December.
Four new board members will take the place of Lockard, Judy Berryman and John Klingeman, who chose not to run for re-election, as well as board President John Donley, who lost a re-election bid on Nov. 7.
Donley thanked Lockard and invited Lockard to take his seat as president to say a few words and adjourn the meeting by striking the gavel.
“I want to say congratulations to the new board members. Time goes by fast. I used to have dark hair,” Lockard said. “I’d like to thank the citizens of the district; I tried to do the best job I could,” he said. He fought back tears.
“Let’s keep the Altoona Area School District the best district in Pennsylvania.”
