Family in plane crash suffered ‘serious injuries’

The names of four people injured in a small plane crash Saturday afternoon in Cambria County have been revealed by several news outlets.

A Fort Wayne, Ind., family was aboard a Piper PA-34 Seneca aircraft when it crashed about 1:30 p.m. near Beulah Road and Allie Buck Road, a mile north of the Ebensburg Airport, according to a Cambria County 911 supervisor.

The family was identified as Wayne “Doug,” Dawn, Mariah and Zach Zollinger by WANE-TV of Indiana.

Shortly after the accident, all four people were taken to area hospitals — two by ambulance and two by helicopter.

On Monday, all four passengers were alive, but National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Nicholas Worrell said they suffered “serious injuries.”

“They are in the hospital right now,” he said.

The NTSB is investigating the crash, which happened in Cambria Township, in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration, Worrell said.

The FAA’s investigators likely will search the wreckage for any clues as to why the plane crashed, he said.

On Monday, no additional information was provided by the FAA. Previously, FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen confirmed there were four people on board the small, twin-engine plane. She said the FAA will release the aircraft’s registration information after local officials release the names and conditions of the four people who were on board the plane.

State police, the FAA and the NTSB said Monday they could not comment on the plane’s passengers.

WANE-TV reported that “neighbors, who have spoken to family members of the Zollingers, said they have bumps and bruises and some broken bones, but all four are expected to survive.”
