Pair face assault, robbery charges

Third suspect in case has not been identified or arrested

A Cambria County man and Indiana County woman face numerous robbery-related felony charges for allegedly breaking into a woman’s home Oct. 17, assaulting her and stealing multiple items, including drugs.

A third robbery suspect has not been identified or arrested.

Charges were filed against Darren E. Mitchell Jr., 23, of Northern Cambria and Keriane L. Cameron, 24, of Clymer on Wednesday, and the pair was arraigned Saturday afternoon before Magisterial District Judge Kevin Price, court documents show.

According to a criminal complaint filed by Patton Borough police, Mitchell, Cameron and a third person broke into a Patton apartment along Murray Avenue about 1:30 a.m.

Once inside, Cameron fought with a woman who lives in the apartment, “physically striking her,” police said.

Police said Cameron “got on top of the (woman) and began to strangle (her) to near unconsciousness repeatedly.”

Mitchell also hit the woman and held her legs as Cameron choked her, according to a second criminal complaint, which later claimed Mitchell choked the woman, too.

During the assault, Cameron and Mitchell also repeatedly told the woman that they were going to kill her, police said.

Officers said the woman was seen later with “ligature marks” on her neck and injuries to her hands and face. She was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Immediately after the assault, police said the three alleged robbers searched the apartment, stealing prescription drugs including two Suboxone strips, four Subutex and a bottle of benzodiazepines.

They also stole a computer tablet, $850 in cash and the woman’s keys, and her vehicle, a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox, according to the complaint.

According to online court documents, Mitchell and Cameron each face felony charges of robbery, robbery while inflicting bodily injury, aggravated assault, criminal trespass and theft by unlawful taking. They also face lesser charges of receiving stolen property, making terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person and harassment.

Both Mitchell and Cameron remain in Cambria County Prison, unable to pay 10 percent of $75,000 bail, online court documents show.

Mitchell and Cameron are to appear for preliminary hearings at 1 p.m. Oct. 31.

On Monday afternoon, a Patton Borough police officer said the third person involved in the robbery had not yet been identified and remains at large.
