Man accused of shoplifting, assault

An Armstrong County man is behind bars after police say he struggled with officers during a foiled shoplifting incident at Logan Town Centre.

Jeffrey P. Sims, 39, of Kittanning was taken into custody by Logan Township police Tuesday after Kohl’s employees called to report a suspected retail theft in progress.

Logan Township officers arrived at the store at 5:35 p.m. and were told by loss prevention employees that Sims had been spotted walking around the store, taking various items off the racks without looking at price tags before heading into a fitting room.

Sims allegedly picked up bottles of cologne and then placed clothing over them before taking a number of baseball caps off a rack.

When Sims headed into a dressing room, he was wearing a red backpack, and loss prevention employees took note of how full the bag looked.

When Sims emerged, he started putting items back, except the hats. Police said employees noted his backpack looked fuller when he walked out of the fitting room than it did when he walked in.

A Logan Township officer was positioned outside the store to wait for Sims to exit, and when Sims walked outside and saw the officer, he backed up and started to run, police noted.

Sims ignored police as they yelled for him to stop and then struggled with officers as they tried to take him into custody. Police said the two Logan Township officers involved in the brief struggle with Sims suffered minor injuries that required medical attention at UPMC Altoona. Sims was also taken to the hospital for evaluation.

Sims, who police said has an outstanding warrant in Armstrong County, faces charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, retail theft and criminal mischief in Blair County.
