Public invited to vote for plows

PennDOT is inviting the public to choose the Fan Favorite of the District 9 Paint the Plow contest by liking their favorite in the contest photo albums on the PennDOT Facebook page.

Voting runs through noon Monday. The photo in each album with the most “likes” will win the contest for the county. Voting can be done at https://www.facebook.com /PennsylvaniaDepartmentofTransportation/?hc–ref=ARSL2HnfqAojwZUTgW6.

“We encourage students and community members alike to go and vote for their favorite plow in this contest,” said District Executive Thomas A. Prestash. “The students worked hard on this initiative, and we are very proud of their efforts and are looking forward to running the plows in their respective areas throughout this winter season.”

All high schools across the six-county region were invited to promote winter safety by painting department plows that were delivered to the schools. This year there were 35 schools painting 37 plows.

The plows will be mounted to a plow truck in the areas of the respective school districts for the upcoming winter season.

College to host shredding event

Juniata College will host a shredding event for community members and members of the college’s campus community on Friday.

People can bring documents to be shredded between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Beeghly Library parking lot at 19th and Moore streets. The event is free and open to the public.

Juniata campus technology staff will be on hand to assist with the process.

VITA training sessions set

Blair Senior Services Inc. will host Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program training sessions on Oct. 25, Dec. 6 and Dec. 13 at its offices located at 1320 12th Ave.

Registered volunteers must attend all three sessions.

The VITA program’s specially trained and certified volunteers help low-income individuals who are unable to complete their taxes themselves and can’t afford to hire a paid tax preparer. VITA’s volunteers can help interpret forms, understand finances and ensure that the taxpayer can get as large a refund as possible.

Training sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in a classroom setting. Training user guides will be included.

The National Taxpayers Union Foundation estimates that the American economy loses $230 billion each year in productivity because income taxes can be so difficult to understand. And this can be especially true for older Americans who often have multiple sources of income, such as Social Security and pensions, as well as plenty of deductible expenses.

To register for the training, contact Laura Ford at 946-1235 or by email at LFord@blairsenior.org. Seating is limited.
