Track project nearly complete

Mishaps delayed Spring Cove project

ROARING SPRING — The new Spring Cove School District track is in its final stages, administrators said, after a series of mishaps delayed the project and added expenses through the summer.

Contractors are adding red-colored surfacing material to the track, the final step before lines and markings can be added to the top, Superintendent Betsy Baker said.

“We’re heading toward the finish line,” she said.

The later stages have been slowed somewhat by cooler morning weather and dewy conditions, which can hamper the drying and finishing process, she said. But the delays are less severe than those than plagued early work, when contractors learned the earthen base was too weak to support the track.

Those delays came with additional price tags: $66,000 for the first issue, and about $100,000 when a second problem was discovered. As of mid-July, the total price was expected to be close to $631,000, board members said.

Once the subterranean problems were fixed, work proceeded more quickly, Baker said. The ongoing work during the school year has created minor problems for some fall sports, with the Central High School football team forced to practice at a backup site.

“They’ve been flexible working with us,” Baker said. “And they’re winning, so it hasn’t hurt them.”
