Hospital announces community benefits

UPMC Altoona provided about $39 million worth of charitable services for fiscal 2016, as defined by the IRS, according to the hospital’s recently released Community Benefit Report.

The benefits for that fiscal year, ending June 30 of last year, include:

n $20 million worth of charity care and unreimbursed services and programs for the poor.

n $17 million worth of community health programs and donations, including blood pressure and arterial screenings; discounted or free prescriptions for the poor; mental health education programs, a 24-hour phone crisis center and support groups for depression, stroke and sleep disorders.

n $2 million worth of medical research and education, via a residency program for family physicians; a medical laboratory program and relationships with area colleges to provide hands-on training for physical therapists, registered nurses, pharmacists and medical assistants.

The UPMC Altoona contributions were part of UPMC’s overall $912 million in community benefits.
