Dispute leads to arrest
City man allegedly assaulted disabled father-in-law
A family dispute allegedly ends in violence and felony charges against a city man.
Evan M. Barner, 24, of 907 South St., was arrested Sunday night after he allegedly assaulted his disabled father-in-law at 1925 12th Ave. just before 11 p.m.
According to Altoona police, Barner arrived at his in-law’s home and began berating his father-in-law before repeatedly striking the man in the head.
The alleged victim was also choked by Barner, police said, and the man suffered a cut to his head when he was pushed backward by Barner and fell and struck a wall.
Barner had been drinking, police said. After he was taken into custody, he continued to yell and told police he had put up with his father-in-law for seven years and finally had enough so he “beat his ass.”
Police said Barner clogged the toilet in a holding cell at the Altoona Police Department, and when he was moved to another cell, struggled with an officer and ultimately fell and struck his head against the wall.
AMED responded to the police station, and Barner was taken to UPMC Altoona for treatment of a cut to the back of his head.
