Man’s body found in Juniata River

A search-and-rescue team found the body of the Altoona man who went missing during a camping and fishing excursion on Friday.

John Paul Prunkard, 70, was missing since Friday night when he failed to show up for an arranged ride. He had been camping and fishing for several days in the Frankstown area when he called for a ride because of sudden rainfall, a police report states.

When his ride arrived at the Frankstown bridge at Reservoir Road, his belongings were found packed, but he was nowhere to be seen.

Prunkard’s body was found Tuesday by state troopers and members of the Geeseytown Fire Company in the Frankstown branch of the Juniata River.

State police spokesman Trooper David McGarvey said there was no indication that foul play was involved. An autopsy is scheduled for today to determine the cause of death.
