Hearings delayed for homicide suspects

BEDFORD — Preliminary hearings for three suspects in a Bedford County homicide case were delayed Wednesday, with new hearings scheduled for next month.

Heather Renee Schade, 39, of Bedford; James Antonio Wallace, 29, of Randallstown, Md.; and Devonta Desean Gaines, 22, of Baltimore; were set for preliminary hearings Wednesday morning at the Bedford County Courthouse in the homicide of 50-year-old Gary Wayne Shriver Jr.

The hearings were pushed back to Sept. 13, according to court records.

The three face criminal homicide and conspiracy charges in Shriver’s weekend death near a lake in southern Bedford County. Police found Shriver, of Cumberland, dead with more than two dozen wounds after a nearby witness called 911 to report a disturbance.

Schade, Gaines and Wallace later drove to the scene while authorities investigated, state police said. Troopers stopped them and allegedly found blood on their car.

The suspects remain in the Bedford County Jail without bail.

Police have not detailed a suspected motive in Shriver’s death, but District Attorney Bill Higgins has said the killing may be connected to drugs.

Public defender Karen S. Hickey is representing Schade in court; Gaines and Wallace are represented by court-appointed attorneys, according to online records.
