Police: Teenager fought officers

Turiano faces assault, resisting arrest charges

A teenager faces charges after police say he fought officers in a drunken rage.

Kyle E. Turiano, 19, of 630 Rutgers Lane, posted 10 percent of his $2,000 bail on Thursday after his arraignment on charges that include multiple counts of felony aggravated assault of a police officer and misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest.

According to Altoona police, officers responded to a call about a disturbance just before midnight Wednesday near 14th Street and 17th Avenue.

Police were told by witnesses that a group of people had gathered at a home on the 1400 block of 17th Avenue, with some hanging out on a front porch. When Turiano got physical with his girlfriend during a fight, she was given sanctuary inside the house and Turiano was repeatedly asked to leave, police said.

After he was forcibly carried from the property by the host and some friends, Turiano continued to try to hit anyone within reach, police were told by witnesses. It was when the disturbance had spilled onto the street and a large number of people gathered, that police arrived on scene.

Police found Turiano on a nearby porch, covered in sweat and blood and yelling, “Where is my shoe?” according to the charges filed before Magisterial District Judge Todd Kelly.

Turiano was drunk and aggressive with police, saying he was “shooting up” the house from where he had been ejected. Police said Turiano struggled with officers who tried to pat him down and kicked at the door of their patrol car once he had been handcuffed and placed inside the vehicle.

At the Altoona Police Department, Turiano continued to struggle with police, allegedly kicking one officer twice before kneeing him in the head while the officers attempted to put Turiano in a restraint chair. Police contend Turiano spit on another officer, and when officers placed a spit shield on him, he would shake it off. Turiano was ultimately hit with pepper spray before he calmed down and could be released from the restraint chair.

Turiano is also charged with disorderly conduct and criminal trespass as well as summary charges of underage drinking and public drunkenness.

A preliminary hearing is slated for Wednesday at Central Court.
