C-K seeks help in leader search

CLAYSBURG — Claysburg-Kimmel officials are soliciting help from the state school boards association in their ongoing search for a new superintendent.

School board members voted 7-1 Wednesday, with one member absent, to pay the Pennsylvania School Boards Association for its services in finding a new superintendent. Board President Jeremy Knott said the $1,500 expense would cover the association issuing an online notice and sending experts to advise board members on their next steps.

Knott said board members will take their time in finding a replacement for former Superintendent Royce Boyd, who retired this summer with a year left in her contract. Norman Hatten Jr. is working part time as interim superintendent, with a $500-per-day deal that could last until next summer if needed.

“We certainly aren’t dragging our feet, but we want to make sure we do this right,” Knott said.

Board members discussed several ideas Wednesday, including conducting the search themselves and hiring an outside consultant to contact candidates. Carrying out a search alone, some noted, could carry legal risks that could ultimately cost more than hiring outside help.

“I’m definitely in favor of not spending any more money than we have to. However, we’re in a position to hire the most important position in an organization that operates on about $12 million a year,” Knott told fellow board members. “We’re probably going to be paying well over $100,000 a year (in salary) and I feel that that in itself warrants using some help.”
