Police: Man attempted to cheat on drug test

A Tyrone man now faces criminal charges in a third alleged incident after police say he tried to use synthetic urine to cheat on a drug test.

Richard A. Barner, 44, of Tyrone was arrested April 28 after he allegedly hit his wife in the face and did not allow her to leave, and then on June 16, his father and estranged wife reported that he had broken into his father’s home, according to Tyrone police.

Barner allegedly kicked in a basement door to his father’s home June 16. Barner had been kicked out of the home five days earlier, police said. After gathering a pile of clothes and coins, Barner was spotted by his father running out the front door.

The same day, Barner allegedly was caught by a probation agent attempting to use synthetic urine during a drug screening. According to sheriff’s department’s charges, Barner allegedly told a deputy that he bought the synthetic urine at a Tyrone convenience store because he had smoked marijuana about two weeks before the test and was worried it would show up.

Barner is charged with a misdemeanor furnishing drug-free urine in that case and is due to appear before Magisterial District Judge Paula Aigner on July 18 for a preliminary hearing.

Barner is due to appear before Magisterial District Judge Fred Miller on Tuesday for a preliminary hearing on the burglary and theft charges filed in that case. A bail revocation hearing is also scheduled for Tuesday before Miller.
