Five children and their parents escaped their 724 S. Logan Blvd. home near Lakemont Sunday night before it was consumed by fire.

Scott Decker watched from a safe distance as firefighters swarmed the house that he and his partner and their children, ages 12-17, had called home.

“I think I am in shock,” he said. “I was gone for 45 minutes. They were all in bed for school,” Decker said.

Decker’s partner, Mike DeCort, said he and the children had been sleeping when one of his children came into his room about

10 p.m. and said the smoke alarm was going off.

“I went downstairs and the dining room was on fire. I got all the kids out and went back in to look for Scott,” DeCort said.

With a phone call, the family quickly learned Scott was safe, getting pizza.

DeCort said his effort with a fire extinguisher wasn’t enough.

Firefighters from Allegheny Township, Lakemont and Roaring Spring stations were on the scene until early this morning. The fire chief in charge was not available for media comment.
