Man faces strangulation charge

Gartmann accused of grabbing wife’s neck, throwing her

Andrew J. Gartmann, 34, of Altoona was charged with a felony count of strangulation and a misdemeanor count of simple assault stemming from a domestic incident on Sunday, according to a police report.

Gartmann forced his way into the door on the 200 block of Good Shepard Road in Logan Township, the report states, and allegedly spit in the face of his wife, then slapped her on the right side of the face. According to the report, the couple are still married but have been separated on and off for several years.

Prior to Gartmann’s arrival, the two had been texting about their upcoming divorce, and the woman had ordered her two young children to hide upstairs, the report states.

Gartmann, who is 6-foot-3 and weighs 190 pounds allegedly grabbed his wife’s face, and neck with both hands, lifted her off the ground and then threw her into the kitchen sink twice. After that, Gartmann is accused of continuing the strangulation, according to the report.

Police at the scene took photographs of the woman’s injuries, the report states.

Gartmann’s bail was set at $7,500 unsecured bail. A preliminary hearing for Gartmann is set for April 6 before Magisterial District Judge Steven Jackson.
