Cambria approves contracts

Union agreements include ‘modest’ salary increases

EBENSBURG — Cambria County commissioners voted Thursday to accept agreements with eight worker unions, which included only “modest” salary increases.

County Human Resources Director Bryan Beppler discussed briefly the individual union contracts, which vary between five, four and three years.

Beppler said he worked closely with union representatives, who “understand the fiscal realities of the county,” while drafting the contracts.

The contracts include salary increases at an average of a little less than 2.25 percent, Beppler said.

“The increases were modest,” he said. “In our belief we thought it was a fair agreement.”

Other contract changes were insignificant, Beppler said.

In all, the contract negotiation and development process took about eight to nine months, he said.

“We’ve had a very good relationship with all the unions,” Beppler said.

Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the agreements.

Prior to the commissioner’s meeting, the county Salary Board voted unanimously to abolish three county positions:

– Full-time second deputy for the controller’s office at $31,494.58 per year.

– Full-time clerk typist II for the courts at $12.98 per hour.

– Full-time executive assistant for the commissioners’ office at $26,469.09 per year.

The board also authorized the creation of a full-time clerk of courts/children and youth position for the courts at $15.70 per hour.

Following the meeting, Commissioner Mark Wissinger said the abolishments are the result of a recent decision to edit duties and shuffle employees to improve efficiency, and they could lead to a cost savings.
