Police: Man lied on gun application

Logan Township police have charged a Hollidaysburg man for allegedly lying on a gun application.

Donald K. Weichel, 58, 722 N. Juniata St., Hollidaysburg, faces charges after he allegedly answered, “no” to a question on the firearms sales paperwork asking if he had ever been convicted of a crime where a judge could have imprisoned him for more than a year, according to police.

Weichel is federally prohibited from buying a gun because of a 2009 first-degree DUI guilty plea, police noted. Weichel was denied during the attempt to buy the gun at Shooters Sports Supply on Frankstown Road after a Pennsylvania instant check was performed, police noted.

Weichel is charged with felony material false written statement and misdemeanor unsworn falsification. No court date has been set for his arraignment or preliminary hearing.

Rockwood students take first place

LORETTO — Students from Rockwood Area High School in Somerset County captured first place Friday during the Business Bowl — the final event of the 16th annual Business Day at Saint Francis University.

The Rockwood team defeated Richland, which had defeated Central High School.

More than 250 students from 10 area school districts participated in the event, hosted by SFU’s Enactus.

Business Day gives students educational opportunities, providing them with real-life business situations that they must first evaluate before working as a team to find the best possible solutions.

Throughout the day, students were able to interact with Enactus members, business students and faculty and guest lecturers to gain business and professional knowledge.
