Reade Township authority allows new member to take seat on board

A Reade Township Municipal Authority meeting Thursday passed without legal difficulty as newly appointed member Kate Malon took her seat on the board.

Malon, who had initially faced challenges from some on the board, took the seat Thursday and said she aims to remain for a complete term.

“Things went as well as they could be expected,” Malon said Friday.

Some board members, including Jim Thompson, had initially questioned Malon’s ability to sit on the board after the Reade Township supervisors appointed her to fill an open seat. Malon, who used to work for the northeast Cambria County-based water authority, left her job amid allegations that she had accessed customer records without permission. Charges were never filed in the case.

After initially claiming she might not take the seat in hopes of avoiding conflict, Malon later decided to join the board, she said.

“I would like to (remain),” she said. “I’m hoping I can do some good.”

While Thursday’s meeting included some disputes, there were no major battles over policy or issues that would affect customers, Thompson said.

Thompson said he signed necessary forms to secure a loan from Pennvest, the state infrastructure investment authority, to help upgrade authority facilities.
