Fire damages unit in Ebensburg apartment building

An Ebensburg apartment building was damaged Saturday by smoke and flames, but firefighters said the building on the 700 block of North Center Street can be repaired.

Firefighters were called to Turner Apartments about 1:30 p.m., when there were reports of a fire in one of its units, Dauntless Volunteer Fire Company Chief Mike Sheehan said.

The fire, which likely began in a stovetop area, was contained to one room, Sheehan said, though some smoke escaped.

“We just had some smoke conditions on the fourth floor in the hallway,” he said.

The fire was extinguished within about 20 minutes, Sheehan said.

A man lived in the unit, but he was not inside at the time of the blaze. Though there was some damage to his apartment, most of his belongings were salvaged, Sheehan said.

The apartment has 61 units, and all occupants were evacuated, he said. There were no injuries to resident or firefighters, Sheehan said.

Dauntless was assisted by Revloc and Cambria Township volunteer fire companies. Ebensburg EMS also was on scene.
