Minister, wife killed in Logan Town Centre crash; three others injured

Police have identified the drivers in Tuesday’s crash that claimed two lives in Logan Township.

The Rev. Jerry A. Hayward, 50, and his wife, Kathleen J. Hayward, 59, of Hollidaysburg, were killed when their 2009 Chevrolet HHR was struck head-on by a 1995 Jeep Chrokee driven by 30-year-old James M. McCleary.

Logan Township Police Chief Tim Mercer said Jerry Hayward was pronounced dead at the scene and Kathleen Hayward died at UPMC Altoona.

Police said while the investigation is ongoing and crash reconstructionists will be looking at all factors in the deadly crash, speed was likely a factor.

McCleary was driving south on Osgood Drive when he lost control of his SUV, which careened down the concrete median and ultimately slammed into the Haywards’ vehicle. McCleary suffered moderate injuries, police said.

McCleary’s Cherokee then became airborne and landed on the hood of a 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander being driven by 44-year-old Jennifer Kuhns of Altoona. Kuhns and her teenage son were both taken to UPMC Altoona for treatment.
