Coroner identifies driver

The driver in a fatal crash on Frankstown Road has been identified.

Blair County Coroner Patricia Ross said Thursday that Michael McGuigan, 75, of Altoona, died of blunt force trauma suffered in an automobile crash Tuesday morning.

Ross said McGuigan was a retired Hollidaysburg Area School District teacher, and it is believed he suffered some sort of medical emergency, which caused him to lose control of his car about 9:30 a.m. Tuesday as he headed north on Frankstown Road.

Ross said the medical event didn’t kill McGuigan, and he died of his injuries from the crash at UPMC Altoona. Police said McGuigan’s car failed to negotiate the long, sweeping right-hand curve near Chapel Drive and slid sideways as it left the road before rolling and hitting several trees.
