Tyrone’s wellness efforts recognized

Tyrone Hospital has earned statewide recognition for its health and wellness efforts.

The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania named the Tyrone facility one of three award winners in the community benefit category for its campaigns to “address obesity and physical inactivity,” according to a release.

Tyrone Hospital CEO Steve Gildea said it’s exciting to see that these initiatives are being recognized.

“It’s rewarding that somebody is recognizing the efforts that we’ve been putting in for the past couple of years to be really connected to the community,” Gildea said.

Tyrone Hospital was one of 15 winners selected from 100 applicants, according to the release. Other award categories include patient safety, innovation and operational excellence. HAP’s awards are designed to showcase new and unique hospital initiatives.

St. Joseph Regional Health Network, based in Reading, and York’s WellSpan York Hospital were also recognized in the community category alongside Tyrone.

The awards are determined by a 15-judge panel that includes members from both the public and private sectors, as well as businesses outside of the health care industry.

HAP President and CEO Andy Carter said in the release the awards are worth more than a simple round of applause.

“Their innovation instills pride in our health care system and will positively drive it forward as health care in Pennsylvania continues to change,” Carter said in the release.

Health and wellness in Blair County has been one of Tyrone Hospital’s major initiatives over the past year. Last summer, the Tyrone Fitness and Wellness Center opened on the hospital’s campus, and since then, the hospital has coordinated a number of events encouraging better health.

“Anytime you receive that (award), it tells you that what you’re doing is right on the spot,” Gildea said.
