Sale for bishop’s home pending
The Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown has reached a tentative agreement with a buyer for the former home of Bishop Mark L. Bartchak.
The house, located on the corner of Logan Boulevard and Larch Street in Frankstown Township, has been on the market for about three weeks, said Tony DeGol, diocese secretary for communications.
The home was listed by Coldwell Banker Town & Country Real Estate of Altoona at a price of $995,000.
DeGol said the home is at “sale pending” status, and if all goes well, a full sale could be finalized in the next month. He said the diocese is “optimistic” that the rest of the needed steps to sell the home will go smoothly.
He did not identify the buyer.
The house generated a lot of interest among potential buyers, DeGol said, and the diocese is glad that it was sold quickly. The bishop’s house saw “significant traffic” during its time on the market, he said.
“We’re happy that it moved quickly, but I guess I’m not really surprised – it is a very beautiful property,” DeGol said. “I know the bishop is very thrilled.”
The bishop’s home, which was built around 1915, was marketed as a six-bedroom, seven-bathroom house. The home sits on about 3 acres of land. Bartchak was the fourth bishop to live in the home. He had lived there from 2011 until this summer.
The diocese announced its intent to sell the bishop’s home in late June, revealing that Bartchak would move into the rectory of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona.
Proceeds from the sale will be used for “pastoral needs” in the diocese, according to a press release issued on June 26, which may include “care for victims in sexual misconduct cases.”
DeGol said in June that the funds would be used on an as-needed basis, and it would not be predetermined exactly where the money will go.
According to the release, Bartchak is excited to once again be living among priests.
