Power back in Altoona

Penelec spokesman John Shimco said this morning a problem at the company’s 20th Street substation resulted in the temporary loss of electrical power to approximately 2,900 customers in Altoona.

The power was quickly restored, Shimco said.

He said the blackout extended from Pleasant Valley Boulevard to the railroad tracks and affected the area between 20th Street and 28th or 29th Streets.

A fuse blew out and caused the main transformer to shut down.

He does not know what caused the fuse to blow. It possibly could have been an animal or equipment failure, Shimco said

Crews responded immediately and restored electricity to 700-plus customers within three minutes.

Power then was gradually restored to the other customers by 9:31 a.m.
